Main Purpose

Your main purpose as Safety, Health & Environment Manager will be to facilitate improvement in our safety performance and drive behaviour and culture change at all levels. You will provide advice, guidance and support on the management of Health, Safety and Environment to the Norwich Management Team and others, and be part of a small UK SHE team that designs and champions the implementation of a UK Safety Strategy, UK safety standards and safety tools and programmes including the proactive measurement of our safety performance.

The Key Tasks & Responsibilities:

  • To provide professional advice to the site management team on the day-to-day management of health, safety and environmental issues covering all colleagues, contractors and visitors.
  • To work with the local Management team to champion the implementation of the UK safety strategy and the associated tools and programmes.
  • Work with other members of the UK SHE Team to drive consistency in approach across the UK and in particular with the Preston site.
  • To challenge the way we do things with a view to achieving behavioural and culture change at all levels. A creative and flexible approach to problem solving and corrective/preventative actions is required.
  • To develop line management capability with regards to Health & Safety advising where performance is below an acceptable level.
  • To ensure safety information is communicated effectively across the site.
  • Develop and establish appropriate UK safety standards and safe systems of work in accordance with the agreed UK strategy.
  • Carry out reviews and evaluations to identify improvement opportunities and feedback to the management team.
  • Be visible on the factory floor engaging all colleagues in health and safety
  • Be the main owner of the site’s ISO 14001 environmental management system working closely with the Quality team.
  • Liaise with external bodies where appropriate eg Health and Safety Executive, Local Authority Environmental Health Officer, Environment Agency, Insurers, BSI, etc

Knowledge and Experience

  • The post holder should have 3 – 5 years’ experience in a similar safety role where the main objective is to influence the site management team and hold an appropriate professional qualifications, e.g. NEBOSH Diploma or similar and be committed to achieving Chartered Membership of IOSH.
  • The post holder should have experience of successfully leading a site beyond legal compliance.
  • The post holder must be able to engage with employees at all levels and be an accomplished communicator who can influence others.
  • The role requires knowledge of management systems and specifically the requirements of ISO 14001:2015.  The site has recently decided to discontinue with OHSAS 18001 and not to introduce ISO 45001.
